The Rising Nepal –Kathmandu: The current surge of rainfall is expected to subside by Sunday afternoon. This intense weather, accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms, was due to the formation of a low-pressure system hovering over northern-central Maharashtra, India, which is influencing weather patterns across the region, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM).
Rojan Lamichhane, a meteorologist with the Meteorological Forecasting Division, said that many areas are experiencing thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rainfall. “The current situation will gradually improve from Sunday,” he added.
The effects of this precipitation, which began on Friday morning, have been intense, with the highest recorded rainfall of 265.6 mm recorded at the Khopasi station in Kavrepalanchowk over 24 hours leading up to 6 PM on Saturday.
Nearly 60 stations across the country recorded rainfall exceeding 100 mm during this period. The second-highest precipitation was recorded in Panauti, Kavrepalanchowk, at 263.6 mm, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM).
In Kathmandu, the Babarmahal station recorded 189.6 mm, while the Khumaltar station recorded 228.6 mm. Kritipur station received 166.2 mm, Panipokhari station measured 167 mm, and Godavari and Lele stations in Lalitpur recorded 253.4 mm and 159.4 mm, respectively, the DHM reported.
Similarly, the Chisapanigadhi station in Makawanpur recorded 185.2 mm, Dhunge station in Sindhupalchowk recorded 158.8 mm, Daman station in Makawanpur recorded 214.2 mm, Gajuri station in Dhading recorded 191.2 mm, and Trishuli station in Chitwan recorded 234.1 mm.
Additionally, Sakhar station in Tanahun measured 175.4 mm, the Narayani Field Office in Chitwan recorded 196 mm, Danda station in Nawalparasi recorded 202.2 mm, Archale in Palpa recorded 220 mm, Tilottama station in Rupandehi recorded 183.2 mm, Gaur station in Rautahat recorded 165.2 mm, Kalapani station in Mohattari recorded 153.2 mm, Mulghat station in Dhankuta recorded 203.8 mm, Chatara station in Sunsari recorded 204.6 mm, and Rake station in Ilam recorded 184.8 mm.
On Sunday, there is a possibility of light to moderate rainfall, along with thunder and lightning, in some areas of Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, as well as in one or two places in the remaining provinces. The DHM also indicated a chance of heavy rainfall in one or two areas of Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces.
